New Technology: Gearing Up For The Future
Long Beach Transit has become one of the leaders in the latest transit technology. Systems including
low emission engines, safer performing vehicles and the TranSmart global satellite tracking system,
are all part of a comprehensive move to provide state-of-the-art service for 2000 and beyond.
In addition, a fleet of 60-foot articulated coaches are coming into service. These "super" buses
seat twice as many passengers as regular coaches and reduce overall traffic congestion. In fact,
all Long Beach Transit's 220 buses have been modernized to use ultra-low emission fuels, to
preserve Long Beach's beach environment.

Yet another step into the future will be taken with the delivery of 27 hybrid electric buses. These
remarkable vehicles are tested to be 50% more fuel-efficient. Equipped with on-board diagnostic
computers that monitor engine performance, they actually,
e-mail our mechanics if sub-standard performance occurs.
Our TranSmart global satellite tracking system
monitors our whole system to maximize efficiency. And in the near future, our TranSmart
tracking system will be available to you via the internet for precise timing of your daily bus trips.
All these futuristic technologies reflect our commitment to making your trip a more
pleasurable experience. Part of that effort is also reflected in our Bus Stops Beautification
Program featuring attractive new shelters, comfortable benches, easy-to-read transit
information displays, dramatic landscaping and graciously widened sidewalk areas. A number
of these stops are even enhanced with notable art works. And it's only the beginning, 30 more
bus stops are slated for public art and improvement next year.
Today, Long Beach Transit makes a difference for 28 million annual customers. Long Beach Transit. Working harder, making things easier.
